Chorafas Award for my PhD thesis
I have been nominated by the board of professors of my Department at Politecnico di Milano as a candidate for this important award (https://www.weizmann.ac.il/feinberg/about/dimitris-n-chorafas-prize/about-foundation-and-prize), then confirmed by the board of the Foundation and awarded on October 22nd, 2021 at the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering.
The prize is assigned for outstanding work in selected fields in the engineering sciences, medicine and the natural sciences (including Informatics/Computer Science, my field). It rewards research characterized by its high potential for practical application and by the special significance attached to its aftermath.
My thesis was particularly appreciated for its strong interdisciplinarity and application-oriented results. What the board has highlighted is the exceptional results obtained thanks to the repeatability of a solid approach of research to different and very current domains such as the ones of human genomics and viral genomics. This prize shows the strength of my initial research, which is boosting all the following and current efforts in the direction of becoming a researcher with a strong basis and perspective for bringing results to various communities, spanning from the computer science to the life sciences.
